Typcially, most players suggest going with the regular PC version as its one less hassle than having to deal with a third party system. If you go the PC version, expansions are typically on sale more often. If you go with the Steam version it means you can use your Steam wallet for payments. There is no difference between the versions or the game using a particular version. What does this mean? If you decide to start the free trial on the Steam version you are limited to buying the Steam version, and any future expansions, as the Steam version. The regular PC version of the game and the Steam version of the game are incompatible. There will be some restrictions and limitations on what you can do but that is detailed on the signup page. There is literally hundreds of hours of gameplay possible using only the Free Trial. There is a lot of information to process.
